The Institute for Courageous Conversation (iCCAR) was launched in 2016 in Aotearoa New Zealand. The first of its kind, iCCAR was the inspired offspring of a unique partnership between the President of Pacific Educational Group (PEG), Founder and Author, Mr. Glenn Singleton, and 20-year academic and practitioner of racial equity, Dr. Matthew Farry.

Nonetheless, as the whakatauki/proverb above indicates, the existence of iCCAR reflects the dreams our ancestors had for us over many generations. Dreams that paved the way for learning, connections and partnerships to emerge. The birth of the Institute is a reflection of the work of thousands, past and present.


Unitec Institute of Technology was the first home of iCCAR, who formally launched the initiative with a view to growing capability to support students, higher education practitioners, corporations and community-based organizations to better understand and harness racial diversity in Auckland, New Zealand. In recognition of their global leadership as the first satellite institute outside of the United States, Unitec were awarded the prestigious International Racial Equity Leadership Award at the 2016 National Summit for Courageous Conversation (NSCC) in Austin, Texas.

This distinguished award is presented annually for skilful and courageous leadership to establish and institutionalise an equity/anti-racist culture and climate in organisations around the world. It also celebrates work undertaken to promote the voices and perspectives of indigenous people and people of colour in decision-making; especially in relation to creating opportunities that allow staff, and other members of the organisational community, to feel their power, elevate their voices, and achieve at the highest levels. iCCAR Director, Dr. Matthew Farry, was the honoured recipient in 2014 and in 2018, Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education (NZ) were presented with the award to acknowledge the collective leadership demonstrated in taking the courageous first steps to explore the impact of race and racism in the New Zealand education system.

In February 2018, the Institute for Courageous Conversation transitioned away from the partnership model with Unitec and re-established itself as a stand-alone entity to serve the entire South Pacific region. Clearly carving itself out as an international leader for racial equity, iCCAR exists to bring people together to explore the question: “In a context of ever-increasing racial and ethnic diversity, how can I contribute to a more racially equitable and inclusive society?”

Under the care, tutelage and support of PEG, iCCAR has actively sought out initial opportunities in New Zealand and Australia to collaborate with organisations to identify and implement inclusive and equitable learning opportunities in personal, professional, organisational and community settings.
