Beyond Diversity 10-City Tour: Baltimore

Courageous Conversation Brings Groundbreaking Racial Equity Work to Baltimore

Pacific Educational Group, Inc. (PEG) Implements Phase I of its Campaign for National Racial Healing and Progress – Beyond Diversity 10-City Tour

Throughout 2017, Pacific Educational Group, Inc. began to implement Phase I of its Campaign for National Racial Healing and Progress. On June 19-20, 2017 PEG hosted its first conference of the Beyond Diversity 10-City Tour. In a collaborative partnership with Coppin State University (CSU) as host facility, PEG convened leaders from six Baltimore Community Sectors for Beyond Diversity, an introduction to Courageous Conversation About Race (CCAR), and a foundation for Deinstitutionalizing Racism and Eliminating Racial Achievement Disparities.

The Beyond Diversity Conference was held at Coppin State University (CSU) located at 2500 W. North Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21216 in the Talon Center Building. The welcoming ceremony was followed by numerous seminar topics and exercise strategies for identifying and addressing policies, programs and practices that negatively impact student and employee achievement that continue to serve as barriers to everyone receiving a world class education.

Launching in Baltimore served as a national model to other major metropolitan cities and regions to elevating individual and organizational racial consciousness and eradicating racial achievement disparities. Unique to this Beyond Diversity 10-City Tour is PEG’s Intergenerational Multi-Sector Collect Impact approach, which brought together leaders from Baltimore communities to engage in deep learning, thoughtful and compassionate exploration of race and racism, and partnership, as they addressed systemic racism, the most devastating factor contributing to the diminished social, cultural and economic well-being of each city, specifically, and our nation more generally.

Our goal with Beyond Diversity was to open and expand Baltimore’s understanding of race, build the city’s capacity to discuss race, and create the possibility to live free of the limitations created by race. As staunch proponents for Racial Equity Transformation, PEG endeavors to enhance Baltimore leader’s will, skill, knowledge and capacity to understand the universal impact of race in our lives.

“Beyond Diversity is the ideal and foundational platform for leaders, administrators, educators, parents, employees and students to understand that the impact of race on student learning and investigate the role that racism plays in institutionalizing academic achievement disparities”, said Glenn Singleton, Founder & President, Pacific Educational Group (PEG) Author, Courageous Conversation About Race, Second Edition, A Field Guide for Achieving Racial Equity in School.
